Elucidating the structure of the bacterial homologue of ASBT has provided a plethora of information on the workings of the protein. Looking into the active site cavity has shown that the protein can be used to transport other substrates, or drugs that are coupled to bile acids. Research occurred that found out the electrogenic properties of ASBT and its function.
Plus, it is important to remember that although the bacterial homologue of ASBT has high sequence homology with that of a humans, there may be some differences that must be discovered and worked out.
All in all, the elucidation of the structure was definitely a pivotal moment in the study of ASBT and its function, but needless to say, more work needs to be done to ensure all avenues of the molecule are explored.
